4 Letters

This is an old piece I wrote, but it's been on my mind a lot recently, and thus, I'm republishing it here. Sorry if you've read it before. ~A

Love. A word. 4 letters.

It can be hollow – a word said to fill a space, a silence. It can be life-changing – the very thing some people live for. Some verbalize the word to everyone they know. Some avoid it. Blaspheme it. Some search high and low for its meaning. For the feeling it should evoke. Or simply to hear it used toward them.

Stories are written about it. Crafted specifically to conjure the emotions we associate with love. Movies relegated to chick flicks – avoided by men – repeat the same storylines. Boy and girl fall in love. Love. These tales have been deemed too feminine. Too romantic. Too weak to be enjoyed by the stronger sex. Such a naïve view we take.

It’s all about love. The love of another soul. The love of a child. The love of the game, the kill, the high, the win. The love of a friend, a place, a pet, or time.

Love. It’s underestimated. Misunderstood. Overlooked and ignored. To some, it’s everything. To others, it’s less than nothing – a word devoid of meaning.

No matter how you comprehend it – no matter what it means to you – it’s inescapable. It’s love. It’s everywhere.
